Ramadan Kareem in Oman

The month of Ramadan is the ninth month in the Muslim Calendar. it is the period during which Muslims commemorate the revelation of the first verses of the Holy Quran. a month of fasting is observed when Muslims abstain from food, drink and cigarettes during daylight hours. Sunset marks the start of the Iftar, which is the breaking of the fast. This begins with a traditional meal of dates, dry fruits and fresh juices, followed by a lavish feast of grilled meats, flavoured rice and others. Non muslims are asked to respect those fasting by not eating, drinking or smoking in public places. Dress code should be strictly observed.

This is our first experience of ramadan here in muscat. restaurants are closed until late in the afternoon but groceries are open until one in the morning and others operate 24hours. shops (non-food) open at 10am to 1pm and reopen at 7pm to 1am.

now on it's second week, we are pretty much adjusted. bong's official work is until 2pm but he still works in the house (as expected). when we go out, we don't bring snacks, water or even candy in public during daytime, also cigarettes. as adults we know why and how, vivian is in a way following us and i know she tries to understand, the curiousity, the questions she throws and we let her and help her by showing and explaining the fact that we are in a different country with a lifestyle, culture and beliefs not the same as ours. she is doing a good job. =)
